CONFERENCE INFORMATION [FALL-03]

2003 Fall Conference Theme

At this difficult time of economic decline, we struggle to keep our spirits high and maintain our positive attitudes. At work , we face challenges of downsizing, dwindling resources and personnel, and being asked to do more with less. At this conference we come together to listen to ideas from others, reflect upon our practice and seek advice and strength. MWPHE invites you to attend the conference to be stimulated and encouraged by Dr. Theo Kalikow, who will address the theme of "Staying Upbeat in Downbeat Times"

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Theodora J. Kalikow

Dr. Theodora June Kalikow has been president and professor of Philosophy at the University of Maine-Farmington since July 1994. Before assuming the presidency in Maine, she served as Interim President, Dean and professor of Philosophy at Plymouth State College, Plymouth, New Hampshire, from 1987 to 1994. From 1983 to 1984 she was Fellow in Academic Administration for the American Council on Education(ACE) at Brown University.

Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University, a Master of Science degree in Philosophy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Wellesley College.

As one of the three women presidents in the University of Maine system, President Kalikow is listed in the Maine Women's Hall of Fame(2002) and received the Maryann Hartmann Award in 2000.

She became one of the founders of MWPHE while serving as Assistant to the President at the Southeastern Massachusetts-Dartmouth), 1981 - 1983

Her hobbies include reading of all sorts, rowing(when the lake is not frozen), cross country skiing, snowshoeing, gardening, hiking and taking part in triathlons.

Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education, Inc. (MWPHE) is a non-profit organization open to women administrators, as well as to those women who aspire to administrative positions in public higher education in Massachusetts. The organization establishes an information and support network, enhances professional development, encourages and promotes upward mobility, and addresses issues affecting Massachusetts public higher education and the status of women within the system.
