Professional Development Guidelines

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDS

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDS

Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education has funds available to support professional development activities of its members.  The following guidelines and procedures have been developed to make the distribution of funds as equitable as possible.

DECISION-MAKING PROCEDURE

1.  All applications for funds must be received by March 5, 2010.  Requests for retroactive reimbursement for activities prior to January 1, 2010 will not be considered.  All projects must be completed between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.

2.  A Professional Development Committee will review all applications. This Committee will meet one week following the deadline for applications, and will recommend which applications should receive funds. The Committee will keep records of its activities, including copies of applications and anecdotal record of how each decision was reached.

 3. The Executive Board of MWPHE will award a total of four (3) Professional Development Awards in the amount of $1,000 each to our membership.  At least one winner will be selected from each sector:  University, State College, and Community College.

4. Based on the applications received, the committee reserves the right to award the funds to the most appropriate submissions, which may at times consist of more than one award to a particular sector (i.e. two awards to the community college sector and one to the university sector).

GUIDELINES

In reviewing applications for funds, the Committee will seek to support members of MWPHE in professional development opportunities that are of high quality and that are congruent with the organization’s mission and goals as follows:

Mission

Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education (MWPHE) is a non-profit organization committed to strengthening the status of women as professionals and enhancing the quality of higher education.  Membership is open to women administrators and women who aspire to administrative positions in Massachusetts public higher education.
MWPHE advances the role of women in higher education by:

Articulating women’s concerns
Providing professional development and networking opportunities
Advocating on behalf of women within the system

Goals

To provide the opportunity to impact the quality of public higher education in Massachusetts
To represent and support women administrators
To encourage networking for women
To provide professional development via speakers, workshops and forums

The committee will use the following guidelines for the awarding of points to each application:

How the proposed activity enhances the member’s professional/job development and how it fits with the member’s job path (45 points).
How the member’s participation in the proposed activity relates to the goals of MWPHE (35 points).
How the member proposes to share with the MWPHE community what she has learned through the proposed activity (15 points).
Legibility, clarity and completeness of the application (5 points).

Once points have been awarded, applications will be considered for funding only if they have received a minimum total of 80 points from each ranking committee member.

Non-allowable expenses include:
equipment
printing and publishing costs
meals
postage and telephone costs

Funds will be distributed to chosen applicants at the Spring Conference.  Winners must submit receipts upon completion of their activity to the MWPHE Treasurer.  Each award recipient must agree to prepare a written report on the activity in which they engaged under MWPHE sponsorship for inclusion in a future MWPHE newsletter.  Announcement of winners will be made at the Spring Conference.
